Collegiate Amateurism

It's hard to believe that I have not posted a blog since 2009 with all of the things that have happened in the sports world. So without further adieu I thought I would dive in to the ever growing debate of should college athletes be paid.

There is no way around it, big time college athletic programs are big business and making millions of dollars each year. These big programs pay big money to bring in big time coaches and athletic directors. They pay big money to build and maintain these colossal stadiums and arenas which they sell out with ease. And they sell jerseys with the numbers of star student athletes only to keep all profits off that players success. All this money being spread around and the athletes aren't getting any more than the same scholarship student athletes got 10 years ago.

With all the scandal of student athletes trying to sell some of their memorabilia to make a couple extra bucks, the debate has raged on whether we should pay student athletes for all the revenue they help the universities athletic departments create. Personally, I think the debate is merited and I see valued opinions to both sides of the argument.

The biggest thing that bugs me is the merchandise sales that have universities making money off of the athletes. For instance, everyone knows that a #16 Michigan jersey that the university is selling right now is a Denard Robinson jersey. It doesn't have his name on the back of it but everyone associates he jersey with him and his success on the football field. The thing that bugs me is that Denard isn't allowed to see a portion of any of the jersey sales with his name on it. So who keeps the money? That's right you guessed it, the athletic department.

Other arguments for the paying student athletes include the bonuses paid to coaches and universities for making big games. If a college football program was to make a BCS bowl they would be rewarded with a multi-million dollar cash payout for playing in the game. The coach would trigger an incentive bonus in his contract for probably at least 1 million dollars and guess who's left in the cold? I'm sure you guessed the student athletes who actually won the games to get to that BCS bowl. Everyone seems to be getting an extra chunk of the money except the kids who are earning it on the field or court.

Conversely, student athletes are given what is called a grant in aid or a scholarship to attend the university, maintain a high level of academic achievement, and participate in all team functions for their specific sport. Players in big money sports receive a full scholarship to earn a degree while they play their sport on campus. Anyone who has paid their own way to attend college can attest to how much they spend each semester. Not only are these students granted a free education but they are relieved of the burden of paying off student loans after graduation. So its hard to argue they should be getting paid to play when they are receiving a 50,000 plus education for free.

My take on everything is that I don't think student athletes should be paid to play their respective sports. I believe that if they need extra money to get through the semester then they should take out a loan like every other college student has to. I also believe that the NCAA should change its stance on amateurism. As it stands now a student athlete is not allowed to make money by doing commercials or appearances because it affords the athletes an advantage over your every day college student. I believe that if Nike or Gatorade or any other company wants to use a student athlete in one of their commercials or other advertising ads that those athletes should be allowed to do that and make some extra money when they have the time. For me it all boils down to that if you are not gonna share the pie with the athletes you should at least afford them the opportunity to make some money on their own.

Vlady...

Its been 11 years since Vladimir Konstantinov suffered his life changing car accident days after winning the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings. I came across this article from ESPN.com a couple days ago where they looked back at the years since that tragic moment in his life.

I remember watching Vlady, he was one of the most physical hockey players I've ever had the privilege of watching. He was the type of player that you loved to have on your side, but feared playing against.

I personally enjoyed watching the video clip ESPN did on the development he has made since his coma. It's great to see that after all these years he is still welcomed around the Red Wings franchise as if nothing has happened. Konstantinov was my favorite Wings player back then because of his hard work and bone crushing hits. Now he provides an inspiration to others as he uses that hard work to regain his fundamental motor skills that most people take for granted.

I miss watching him roam the Wings defensive zone making opponents work for every inch of ice. However, I'm glad to see that he is making the most out of life after the car accident and that the media hasn't forgot about him either.

Kevin Smith - "Lions will make playoffs"

According to the blog from MLive.com, http://blog.mlive.com/highlightreel/2009/05/kevin_smith_we_will_definitely.html, Detroit Lion's running back, Kevin Smith, stated in his blog on his personal website that the Lions will make the playoffs.

I am in favor of a professional athlete or anyone for that matter to be confident in their abilities, however, this seems a bit out there to me. Sure, you can't expect the guy to say, we're gonna lose 10 games this year, but, you can't be so outlandish in your claims either. My suggestion is to not say anything. Especially, until you taste your first victory as a professional football player. In my opinion, win a game before you start talking playoffs of heck just ask Jim Mora for his feelings on the matter.

I understand that Kevin is feeling good about the team's offseason acquisitions. Honestly you can't blame him either. However, its May, and the teams OTA's are just getting going and its way too early to think about that. I just hope that if he is serious in his claim, that he has a locker room full of guys with like thoughts.

Personally, I'd be happy with a win right now and then we'll go from there. Baby Steps!

In the beginning...

There have been many things in the world of sports which has spiked my interest over the last few weeks. I have also for a while thought about creating my own sports blog to post my thoughts on topics of interest. With the start of summer, I found this to be a perfect time to start it out, and now here we are!

I plan to post my thoughts and comments on things going on in the world of sports. Most of my blogs will consist of things related to the major sports teams in the Metro Detroit area. However, I will dabble a bit into other stories around the country that spike my interest and will even take requests from anyone who reads my blog for my thoughts concerning something they have an interest in.

I feel in order for anyone to know where I'm coming from with my blogs, I should give a background of my sports interests. First and foremost, I am a big football fan of both college and pro ranks. I still love baseball, basketball, and hockey, but they all fall behind my addiction to football. I really could care less about soccer, with an exception to the World Cup. I find that tournament to be fascinating and I attempt to watch as much of it as I possibly can. I was born in Pittsburgh, PA and have a few ties of interest to the Penguins and Steelers. However, I really didn't get into sports until after I moved to the metro Detroit area back in 1990. For some strange reason, I have developed a large interest in the Detroit Lions, perhaps I enjoy the optimistic hope of each season only to be trounced with the agony of each defeat. I love the Tigers. I suffered though the bad years being a witness to 119 losses in one season and have enjoyed their success the last couple years. I have also loved the Pistons ever since I started watching basketball back during the end of the Bad Boys era. I am anxious to see the direction that Joe Dumars takes this franchise after their success over the years. Lastly, there aren't many people who grew up in metro Detroit who don't love the Red Wings. The wings have been the most dominant team in hockey since I got into hockey back at the beginning of the 90's. However, compared to other sports my love for the hometown team isn't alone. I am a big fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins. I got into hockey in the middle of the Penguins back to back Stanley Cup runs. Having been born in Pittsburgh it was a natural connection for me to make and I have been a fan ever since. That being said, its very hard to grow up in Hockeytown and not make a connection to the Red Wings. Over the years I have grown to become big fans of both teams and I can't even make a distinction of which team I like more. I love them both and was in heaven watching 6 games of my favorite teams in the Stanley Cup finals. I didn't care who won, I just wanted a long hard fought series and that is exactly what I got!

Now that I have thrown out my sports background I feel that this blog is ready to get going. I hope that I can create interest for anyone who might read my blogs. I hope some people agree with my thoughts and I hope that I ruffle some feathers cause people think I'm completely off base. My goal is to objectively look at things and post my opinions. I plan to provide links to video's and news articles that spark my interest and hence, leave my thoughts in regards to them. Please feel free to comment and debate any points made during my blogs that you agree or disagree with.

On that note, I am excited to see where this blog goes and what happens in the world of sports!
